आज हम उसी कारण का पता लगाने जा रहे हैं जो आपके मन में हमेशा रहेगा। यह रेलवे पटरियों के बीच रखे पत्थरों के कारण है। अगर आप दुनिया के किसी भी रेलवे ट्रैक को देखेंगे तो आपको ये पत्थर बिखरे हुए दिखाई देंगे। फिर मन में सवाल उठता है कि “केवल पत्थर ही क्यों रखा जाता है? कुछ और क्यों नहीं? ” तो हम इस लेख में इसका जवाब देंगे।

रेलवे पटरियों के बीच पत्थर बिछाने के पीछे एक वैज्ञानिक कारण है। जब रेलवे की शुरुआत हुई थी, तब रेलवे की पटरियों का निर्माण स्टील और लकड़ी के तख्तों से किया गया था। आज, सीमेंट स्लैब, जिसे "स्लीपर" भी कहा जाता है, का उपयोग लकड़ी के तख्तों के बजाय किया जाता है। वास्तव में, ट्रैक पर छोटे पत्थरों को बिछाने के पीछे मुख्य उद्देश्य लकड़ी और सीमेंट के स्लैब को दृढ़ता से तय करना है। जिसके कारण रेलवे ट्रैक को मजबूती से पकड़ते हैं।

ट्रेन चलने पर पटरियों के बीच कंपन उत्पन्न होता है। इसके अलावा, अत्यधिक गर्मी के कारण, बैंड फैल जाते हैं और ठंड में सिकुड़ जाते हैं। ताकि ट्रेन का सारा भार लकड़ी या सीमेंट के स्लैब पर पड़े। लेकिन रेल के बीच पत्थरों के बिछने के कारण सारा भार इन पत्थरों पर पड़ता है। जो कंपन, पटरियों के संकुचन, ट्रेन का वजन सभी समान बनाता है।
